Again With The Hair

After several visits to a barber (the second since the closer crop makeover) he informs that there is a hole in my head. Well, of course there is. Since my very first visit I’d tried to get this barber to cut my hair low. Lower, it seems than HE is comfortable. I think it’s because I’m a woman.

I could be wrong. Still…

Every time he deems himself done & presents a mirror for me to approve the cut, I have to request more off the top. Please. This last time he used the hole as his excuse for not going shorter. I explained (or tried to) what I was after. He clipped some more but when he presented the mirror again, I didn’t see any changes. I settled again for the not short enough cut.

I like this guy. He’s close, friendly and relatively inexpensive. But, I need him to cut my hair the way I want.

I’m going to give him another chance because I’ve waited too long (again) and this bushy-top is driving me nutty. But along with needing a new dentist and possibly a new medical doctor, I may be on the hunt for a new barber (again) soon.

FInding the right person to do the job is a full time job in itself. And once you find the one who does it just right then you have to hang on to them.

  2. I've had the same one for over 20 years. He knows exactly what I want. Good luck in your search.

Notice I didn't say anything about the hole in your head. :-)

  3. I have a cheap guy, too. He makes my hair look as good as it can. I still view appointments as small torture-fests. Suffer through until you're done.

  4. Perhaps it is time to clip it yourself. Wanna come to qm barbering school? I am a licensed and qualified instructor, have no fear.

If you want it THAT short - maybe just invest in a pair of clippers?

I understand that super-short isn't too hard to do.

  7. Trish: How so very true.

    Chapin: I noticed. Thanks.

    Sporks: I try.

Maxine: I would LOVE to be taught to do it myself. To be taught by qm, priceless.

Sassy: I could & if he gets it right or close to right this next time I'll be sure to have a snapshot taken to take with subsequently

NCP: I may just do that. However, getting it short in & of itself is not the problem. It's the shaping that worries me the most.

The do-it-yourself method is really only feasible for the inexperienced if you want it all one length. With that, I do just fine; it still takes some time to make sure you're even all over, but it's totally doable and ever easier with practice. My brother, after 20 years in the military, can do a self-fade, and that dexterity amazes me still. The one time I tried to get a little creative with the clippers it was a disaster, except that it wasn't really because I could just say "Oh, well," and buzz it all off anyway.

I've had just two hairdressers in my adult life, because once I found someone willing to do as I said, I held on tight. When I lived in Orange County, I had a straight punk dude hairdresser with a giant platinum mohawk who had absolutely no quarrel with how short I wanted my hair. Then when I moved to Los Angeles I found a West Hollywood gay boy who got me. Hey, live anywhere near Lakeview?

  9. No. No near Lakeview?

  10. I'm about to drop my guy, though I love him. He just can't get it right. I am not Dorothy-freakin'-Hamill.

  11. So, is it like the movie in there? I'm trying to remember if I've ever been to a barbershop. I vaguely remember when I was very, very young, maybe five.

He doesn't want you lookin' all dykey. You lesbo you.

  12. Like the movie? hmmm... in a faded glory, stone washed jeans sort of way and if you're squinting...maybe.

    YaY lesbos!

  13. Yep... good barbers/hairstylists are hard to find. Once you get one hang on... but don't count on them staying consistent... argh

  14. um... why do you keep going back. Friendly and nice are requirements for friends - NOT for people who cut your hair.. ESPECIALLY when they obviously are NOT listening to you and you are paying them $$ to NOT listen to you!

Move along and find someone else. Aren't you to the point where you just want to say, "c'mon, just cut my friggin hair!!!"

  15. Why? Mostly because it's very close to home & not quite the social hubs some of the other more trendy spots tend to be. But..... one more time for Norman to get it right then on to other options.

  16. Before you go to your appointment cut a patch of hair to the length that you want. Then when he starts cutting he will have to match the length to the area you cut.

  17. Wow. His name is Norman. That's such a great barbershop guy name. It's almost worth it just to say, 'Ya, Norman cuts my hair.'

    Almost.
