April Third Check on April

Disclosure: I am not following April the giraffe, but many are.

Baseball season has started. Sorta. Opening Day for the White Sox was post-poned until Tuesday.  Rain.
Rain. And more Rain.

I have not turned on any external sound and until daughter walked in a few minutes ago, nothing
but the sound of upstairs neighbors clanging about; their dog barking, their baby crying, my dog making whatever sound she makes, and the cat's meowing.

That (not turning on music, news, TV external sound) might not seem like a big deal to some but for me? HUGE. But, I'm trying this new thing, you may have heard of it, sitting in silence. Well, relative silence. Upstairs neighbors and pets aside.

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? The actor (my son) was a performance poet first. He began in his second year of high school, charter member of the the school's Spoken Word Club. He doesn't write poetry much anymore and hasn't been to an open mic (as a performer) in years but he is still quite poetic in his thinking.

Every now an again a stranger leads with an act of kindness and literally stuns me into silence.
Such a thing happened today. To the lady who offered me her pink umbrella for my walk to the bus stop, THANK YOU.

Welcome to Monday. Go HERE form more MBM!

  1. April lives not far from me so we are getting this story 24/7. Sitting in silence is necessary just to escape it : )

I love random acts of kindness - both given and received. They remind me not to fall into "the world is such a terrible place" mindset.

    Congrats on your blog anniversary!

    1. I had no idea. Wow.

Though very much dismayed by many people I still think there are more good /kind than the other.

      Thank you.

  2. Sitting in (relative) silence is why I now live alone. I hope you enjoy it!
Cheers for poetry and giraffes and baseball and kindness. All good things.

(The Mariners lost their season opener. But, it's a marathon, not a sprint.)

Glad you are still blogging, D!

    2. Sox lost their post-poned home opener and were rained out Wednesday. Hopefully today's game will get in and a win may be clocked.

The cross town group, World Champion Cubs start at home on the 10th.

      I am glad you're still reading e. :-)

  3. Oh, April. I have friends who are obsessed. What a strange, strange world we live in that people are watching every move of a pregnant giraffe. Among other things.
The rain. April showers and all, but holy cow, the flooding. It seems we go from one weather event to another.
I need to adopt this sitting in silence thing you speak of. It sounds amazing. I am very bad at true silence as I never quite succeed at shutting my mind down, but I think I need to try.
Yes to poetry, yes to the poetic mind of your son! Such a beautiful thing.
And kindness. How wonderful that we still live in a world where someone will give you a much-needed umbrella. I hope we see more of that.

    1. I know. People kept saying, "April this, or that . . " It took several beats for me to realize who / what they were talking about. Strange, indeed.

I am (slowly) becoming more practiced at quieting external noise and quieting my mind toward allowing true peace to wash over me.

Yes, thank you. And Yes, me too. More.
