Turtle Me This

random list of facts, thoughts, and the like

A few years ago I learned Chicago has a turtle club. Maybe more than one, but for the purposes of this note, one is all I need. The turtle club members had an open house (of sorts) which is how I had the opportunity to meet many turtles. It was a fun day. I thank my friend for bringing that memory back to my forefront.

Have I mentioned that my daughter is a culinary student? I am her official guinea pig taster. It has been fun and interesting.

Fun aside,  I really have to ramp up my m-o-v-e-m-e-n-t regime. Again. And continuing.

Somewhere I read the question, "what are your biggest pet peeves?" I didn't answer there but will answer here: folks clipping their nails in public. Skeeves me right the frack out. Folks mentioned flossing in public and while that is icky, I don't have nearly as much of a  gross out reaction to that.

My brother (the younger) is moving to Georgia in two weeks. He told me two weeks ago. It is fitting.

Seventeen. Why is seventeen stuck in my head?

Marriage. Marriage has been banging around the gray matter of late. Mostly I've been thinking I'll  never (again) get to a point where I'll be in a marrying state of mind. I have lived alone (save for my son and daughter) since the beginning of the new millennium. I don't know IF I can live with another person in that kind of relationship and as I've never lived with a woman . . .

It is, at the moment, a thought too huge to embrace. Still, I am enthralled that the country is inching toward equality in the marriage arena.

Speaking of m-o-v-e-m-e-n-t, I want to take a Zumba class with the local park district. But I'm concerned that the age for the regular classes begin at 15. It's weird. They have a program called ACTIVE ADULTS for adults 50 plus. But they don't have a class for the same group, exclusively. Weirder: Zumba JR. Kids (Ages 4--6)  Zumba Kids (Age 7--11)  Zumba (Ages 15 & Up) . . You see that? What about ages 12--14? No Zumba for them.

Some of the songs on the (new) Michael Jackson album are creepy.

I considered growing my hair out (with designs on braids and beads or locks) and let my haircut cycle stretch from every two weeks to . . . well, now. Which wound up being about four weeks. The. HAIR. had. TO. GO!! I may revisit the idea, but have to figure out a way to survive the awkward stage where it must be combed but still too short to braid. Plus, I must be realistic; my fingers may be losing the nimbleness needed to braid well.

10,000 steps (at least) a day. Twice in the last seven days. The goal for the next seven, twice that.

Aw, thanks for the shout out! I'm kind of amazed at the idea of a turtle club.

I want a daughter who's a in culinary school! Of course, I forgot to have a daughter, so that complicates things.

Well, now you've done it. You've practically guaranteed that you're going to get married by saying you're sure you won't. That, my friend, is how it works.

I always question albums that have come out without the artist having much involvement in them. Although I will admit that I moved away from MJ after Thriller. (And now I have people doing that dance in my head.)

Zumba! The classes are weird, you're right. And 15 is a weird age to throw in with adults. And 10,000 steps. I'm not even close to that at the moment.

Hair. My own hair is such a problem at the moment that I am opting to do nothing. Which is not a great opt. But I don't know what I want to do with it, so I'm .... doing nothing. It's like a huge catch 22.

    1. The turle club (though I'm not a member) is amazing in that it exists. And they hold meetings in a nature preserve in the city. And they (usually) bring their turtles (large and small) to these meetings--or maybe just to the annual "open house" type meeting.

Well, if my wishes had been granted my daughter would have been a second son. But, it all worked out okay. :-)

      Heh..we'll see.

They've been in my head for a week now. OUT damned spot.

I can't sign up for a class that MIGHT include a 15 year old Zumba-ist(?) My steps have to be in the normal course of my day. Yes, I have to manufacture errands or get off the bus several stops before my target destination--but so long as the legs are up to it . . stepping it out.

I bought dye. But I refuse to use it on such a little amount of hair. When the hair is cut very (very) short like the photo above, the dye isn't really needed.

      Yeah. 22 cataches. :-)

  2. So weird, you are the third person I know to talk about turtles this week. I guess these things usually come in threes.

I was thinking about taking a culinary class, being that I suck at cooking. But all the course descriptions say that they follow Health Dept. codes and I think that means that I can't be sticking my fingers in things to taste them. So that doesn't sound like much fun.

I grew out my hair to what I *thought* was past the awkward stage, but it is still awkward. Shaving my head is becoming a viable option.

After I first read your goal of 10,000 steps I thought I'd try it. But I keep forgetting the pedometer.

So yes, like you, a lot of good ideas but not so great at the execution.

Oh well, it's summertime and the living is easy . . .

    1. Yay turtles. Note: haven't seen an actual turtle since that photo was taken.

      Nope. No fingers.

      Hair. Always an issue.

I forget mine every once in a while and oddly? enough I find I am less motivated to take one step beyond that which is absolutely necessary.

"Summer" not offical yet--has been all over the place, making it uneasy for me.

The turtles have been on the move here in the Midwest. It is impossible to drive down a road without doing my part to dodge them. With the recent rain the large and I do mean LARGE ones have been displaced and they roam about on the highway like a large cat.

  4. Turtles. I have a turtle story, but it will have to wait for another time. Meanwhile, enjoy the turtle club!

Hair. Been growing mine out too, and always 'this close' ][ to cutting that shit off! Tired of it!

Movement. Trying. Lots of steps. Bike riding when weather permits. And now, T has decided that we should do an exercise program together. I'm going along with it because she needs it even more than me and together we might stick it out. I'll let you know.

    Marriage? Dodging that one...

    1. Looking forward to your turtle story. This, is the extent of my turtle tales.

      Hair. Argh. Issues. Endlessly.

Partners help (or so I've been told). ;-)

      Fine with me. :-)
