On Theme

This photo was uploaded on 07/24/24 with the intent that I would have written and then posted the subsequent post.

Here we are some days later, well into August and here I am writing and posting.

In the interim one aunt celebrated her 94th birthday (she, the mother of an only daughter) and another, celebrating birthday number 87 next month expressed extreme frustration with her only daughter.

This only daughter celebrated and mourned for deep, deep reasons in conversations with both.

For the record, when I talk about family, aunts, uncles, cousins, it is primarily my maternal relatives I speak of. I don't really have a relationship with any of my dad's side.  I am virtually connected to a few cousins but we haven't spent any face-to-face time together in decades.  When they speak of our grandparents, their parents, and our shared cousins, I'm at a lost.  I don't have the comfort of the history they enjoy.

Also in the interim of the posting of that lovely sunflower a neighbor died.  Our across the hall neighbor, with whom we had a companiable relationship, had gone silent to her distant (she didn't have any relatives in town) relatives. After a couple of days of her not responding to messages, they called our local police for a well check.

Her brother (driver of a vehicle with Texas plates) is here to . . . do what needs doing.  He's been here for two weeks.  Neighbors who have seen, met him outside the building report he isn't doing well; he is deep in the grips of grief.

I can relate.  Deeply.

For also since the posting of that lovely sunflower yours truly celebrated another birthday. Conversations with my brothers (one actual phone conversation the other a conversation by proxy--my older brother and I do not talk) along with conversations with other relatives and friends kicked up a bunch of memorial dust. m

Here I sit on August 14th . . .  well, basically it, here I sit.  I'm not making plans beyond the next 24 (okay, maybe 48) hours.  I am living in the moment, taking it all a day and a step at a time.

My knees will not allow much more than that.

In other news I have posted at least one post a month save June.  What happened in June?  Still, on pace to hit 1,130 posts before years' end.  (I'm at 1,128 LOLOLOL)

Take gentle care, gentle folks; life is a celebration, Celebrate Life.  (of Fame -the TV show, fame).

My mom would not have had the stamina for all the walking I did on Friday but she would have appreciated many of the sights seen. The rain that came later in the afternoon cut the second part of the journey short. But all-in-all it was a day full of reflection, history, sights, and sounds. She was with me every step of the way.

It's Official!

My "little girl" as my mother would say, is leaving.
After deciding on culinary arts as a career, a year of school,
and a nother couple of years of trying on a number of hats
in and around Chicago,

she has applied for, and has been accepted entry to a
work / study program that will take her to resorts in Colorado
and then, Wyoming.
For the next two years.

She will report to the Colorado location by November 7th. She will be there five months.
She will have 30 days before she has to report to the Wyoming location, a moth home
and then back to Colorado.  .

Except for a brief stint during her teen years
and small vacations, my daughter has not ever
been away from home.

WE are excited (and nervous) in equal measure.
No, more excited than nervous.
Danielle has prepared for the opportunity
and is ready for this challenge. She is ready to
take the wheel and steer the course of her career
and her life.
I am sad at the prospect of her leaving. I am happy
she is getting to earn while she learns at not one, but two resort properties.
I am proud that she's developed the confidence to
take this leap.
We have three months to drink it all in.
Cheers!
Congratulations to my only daughter!

Seventy - Six

My mom would have been 76 today. Of all the posts
celebrating her birthday since she died, the first
one said what I need most today.

It is Monday, Again

Can you believe it, Monday September 21st?! And, in a couple of days, the first day of Fall. I am ready . . but not. I've been immersed in the medical billing training and creating cards; words and
images, and more;  memories for my daughter's 30th coming in a little over two weeks.

And through it all, my mother appears, voice ringing in my ears, her image popping in and out of my mind's eye. I've been reflecting on the wise words of Rose Kennedy: “It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.”

It is possible to get tired of pumpkin spice marketing. Give it a rest already.

Celebrate Good Times, Come On*

The beginnings of a birthday feast.

My daughter's gifted me with her talents, her company, wrapped around a baseball game.
(NYYanks over the ChiSox) and fireworks.
It was a fun day, a fun and restorative weekend.

Officially Fifty-Five and feeling pretty good.

On This Day

Thanks to a nasty cold, I've spent the better part of the last two days horizontal. Sleeping, whenever I wasn't medicating, coughing, sneezing, blowing my nose. And as such, have spent little time thinking about the party we hadn't planned, the meal we weren't having. My mom would have been seventy-five today. It is hard to remember the smile that traveled a mile, the laugh that went on and on when the mood struck just right and not be sad that it has to be a memory and not present to experience.

Still, to have had moments of glee, pockets of pleasure in our time together is something to be grateful for and certainly cause for celebration. Someday.

Happy Birthday, mom.

MoMents

Melody and I were rolling along Pleasant Avenue a week ago Saturday; the thought twisting through my head was how laborious the trip to the library was vs. the return trip home. Nice and easy gliding. Almost.

It was mid-day and sunny. People were out and about. Having moved away from the downtown area, the people were fewer and further between.

To our right, a mature woman in a color coordinated outfit hat included, acknowledged our presence with a nod, wave, and  a full on smile. Dimple included.

And I was done. I steered Melody to the curb, took several deep breaths trying (unsuccessfully) to stave off the waterworks. A motorist pulled along aside me, asked if I was okay. I nodded in the affirmative to get her to move along. Snapped from the absorption of the moment, Melody and I roll the rest of the way home.

And there have been many (perhaps, too many) moments like that over the previous couple of weeks, especially the last few days.

Today is my mom's birthday. She would have been seventy-four.

She will be very much on my mind while I maneuver the day, sharing a meal with the kids, remembering the better times.

Peace.
