Apropos of Month-End

site for article
I was clicking and scrolling about the internet and came across an ad for Gorilla Sofa. Imagine my shock and awe when the search bar query yielded multiple images of multiple varieties of magnificence.

Now, I can't imagine feeling the need to NEED to have such a thing in my living space but several folks across the web exclaimed just that.

Different strokes and all that whiz.

Happy End of May. Happy beginning of P R I D E Month.

This Is November

I know, already? Yes, already.

And speaking of ready, who is? For anything? Everything?

The few retail outlets I've visited in recent days are nearly 100% outfitted for the December
holidays (let's face it, mostly Christmas), the holiday movies have hit the airwaves and the 24-7 holiday music programming has begun.

Ready or not, here it is.

Of course, we may all to choose to embrace the joy at our own pace despite the peer pressure.

I'm choosing a much slower place. My daughter and I have spoken of and watched a dozen or so DIY videos for simple holiday themed (simple) table-scapes but otherwise we are both focused on the November holiday; she, menu planning and cooking and me, everything else.

In the meantime I'm trying not to think about elections (runoffs and such. GA, really?) outcomes, majorities, red, blue, the time change and how much the pooch does not like walking in the dark.

Psst..neither do I.

My (hands-free) flashlight chose this time to stop working. I'm shopping for a replacement.

Ready or not, here we are.

Welcome to November.

November

In August of 2016 I participated in a "getting to know you" meme: The Threes of Me

And for the sake of getting something out of my uninspired brain and some ON the books for November before it is no longer November, I thought I'd revisit the THREES now.

Three Names I Go By: Not much has changed here: still 1. Deborah 2.Ma 3. Miss Debbie (although the third variation may appear as Miss Deb or just Deb.) I am also an aunt and a cousin so, I may go by auntie or cuz.

Three Jobs I have Had in My Life: I add to the previous list: camp counselor, writer, (unpaid) and artist.

Three Places I have Lived: All I said then, and Chicago Ave., Taylor Ave, and 18th Street.

Three Favorite Drinks: (I have no idea what I was thinking then? hahaha) those were good but favorites? Hmm... today: turmeric/ginger tea, water, and toss up: coffee or tequila--I guess it depends on the day and / or who is making the coffee. Seriously, I don't drink hard liquor much at all anymore but when I do drink, I lean toward tequila or whiskey.

Three TV Shows I Watch in real time: 2 of the three from then I no longer on the air, so to replace those two: 911 and Supermarket Sweep and to add: Blue Bloods.

Three TV Shows I Watch On-Demand: then, yes still true though I haven't seen either of those in quite a while. Now: FBI CSI: Las Vegas and $100,000 Pyramid, and Succession. Truth: 95% of my screen watching is "on demand" or streamed.

Three Place I Have Been: yes, of course those and: Milwaukee, WI Memphis, TN and Greenwood, MS

Three People who email/(communicate with me on social media) regularly: I don't even remember who Addie is/was? Anywhoo...my daughter, a very good friend/blog buddy, one of my many cousins.

Three of my Favorite Restaurants: my daughter's skills, the pandemic, and economics have kept me out of restaurants for the most part these past few years. I did have Nando's on my birthday and it was enjoyable.

Three Sets of things I Hate: Those from then all pretty good and valid hateful sets. However, full disclosure I began to embrace beets more over the last few years, mostly in the form of juice. Not horrible. I am still not moved to try fresh or pickled beets.

Three of my favorite cars (that I've owned): I can't think of any other car that I've owned to add to the list from then. I was hard pressed to come up with the list then. I am pretty sure that my criteria had to do with the reliability of the cars listed.

I am not that "IN" to cars. I do not own one and haven't owned one in at least a dozen years. That said, I have considered procuring one at some point--expense and other factors keep that thought at bay.

In other news, I've spoken to 4 relatives via the telephone in recent days. That may not seem newsworthy but it most certainly is. The conversations have thrown me into a fit of nostalgia which I will allow may have as much to do with the impending winter holidays.

Cheers

The Year That Is Finally Ending

We are a short (or long, depending on your point of view) twenty days from the end of the longest (yet shortest) year ever. I'm hearing every day, time and time again about how all days have looked the same, how tired we all are of the routines, the isolation, the masks, the frustration with folks not wearing masks, how these days have been the longest ever.

For me, the next twenty days will look a lot like the previous 346 with some exceptions for possible wardrobe changes for possible worsening weather conditions.

Just to catch you up and to clue you in:

Both my son and daughter remain healthy. My son's industry is basically shut down but he has managed to stay afloat and look as though he may weather the storm. Casting calls have resumed, albeit guardedly. My daughter is working in an Assisted Living facility as a culinary lead. They are tested weekly and have on-site safety protocols in place to minimize exposure and spread.

My employment as a revenue cycle specialist with the medical billing company remains active. My being able to work from home (even before the pandemic) has been quite the saving grace. Things with the company were a little shaky for a time; there were lay-offs at the beginning. There have been a couple of new hires so, at least things are holding steady.

I have not cut my hair. I am still sketching though not every day as before. But I feel good about what I produce and the communities I have discovered. I spent a good number of recent days creating and mailing greeting cards for the nearest and dearest of family and friends. I expect to finalize the last batch before the weekend has expired.

My annual medical visits, postponed from May because...well, you know, will take place over the next month or so. I have four appointments lined up and barring any hiccups in any of the labs or screenings I should be good to go for 2021.

Twenty-twenty notwithstanding I'm feeling pretty good. Given the track record here over the last several months I probably won't be back here within the next twenty days so I shall wish you all

Happy Happy Joy Joy for whatever December holiday celebrations you observe. May your next twenty days be more of the same or better or at least full of Peace Joy Love Health and Happiness

Update Status

What hasn't been said in nearly a month:

1. My daughter had knee surgery nearly a month ago. She's frustrated with . . . well, most everything really. Doing my part to keep her spirits up takes nearly everything I have.

2. I failed to commemorate my mom's birthday mostly due to being caught up with concern and care for daughter. It was the 26th of May. She would have been 78. I miss her--still.

3. My bike broke. Thanks to that and other factors I haven't pedaled at all (well, except for gym bikes--sparingly) at all this spring season. I have no doubt not riding is impacting my psyche.

4. I participated in a free web series designed to get my sketchbook mojo ticking. I'm trying to commit to sketching every day.

5. Remember the letter writing month project? I continue to receive lovely letters from members of that group initiative.

6. In addition to re-dedicating myself to sketching and writing (creative endeavors in general), I am also re-dedicating myself to health (I won't say weight loss, though that is the ultimate desired result) goals.

7. I dreamt that I went to a party. I was in a party dress. I woke up in sweats. (Literally and otherwise) ;-)

8. My skin has been on a tear. Atopic dermatitis. Frustrating. Painful. Annoying. Nearly healed--not nearly fast enough.

9. I miss this space/community. I want/need to make the time and effort to write (and visit others) more often.

Where Were Are We?

Recent foggy morning

Two hurricanes ago (so pleased to know folks I know -even virtually- fared okay, so sorry for many other folks did not fare as well) we were talking about my battle with bulge and such.. More talk about that, to be sure. But having had some difficulty framing fully fleshed posts, I offer these snippets:

1. My older brother who lives in Austin, TX is ignoring efforts of outreach from my younger brother and me. He does not want to be bothered. He had a birthday (Happy 59th) on the 6th of this month--which also happened to be the 5th anniversary of our father's death.

2. I joined an FB based writing group of virtual friends and some former blogging buddies. Four prompts in and I haven't written a word. I'm not sure I'm up for these challenges. I may not stay. It may be too much to ask at this time.

3.Getting over a cold which hit hard and fast. Never a pleasant way to usher in a new season.

4. FALL? FALL! IT is nearly (officially) Autumn!! What da duck?

5. My work has been crazy challenging, frustrating, and . . . exhausting. But, on some level, fun.

6. Insurance companies are, by and large, horrible. Okay, some insurance companies.

7. This recent battle with bulge and more has revealed that while I love collecting recipes, looking for and finding, interesting dishes to prepare that will fit within my goals, I feel overwhelmed at the idea of actually preparing any of these dishes.

8. I don't really (have never, really) like cooking. Though, the process intrigues me.

9. Yet, I've been told I'm a pretty good cook. Go figure.

10. Still, I did manage to take some known ingredients in different, healthy, delicious directions.

11. I'm not having a fireworks celebration or anything, but I did manage to get the scale needle to move in the other (correct) direction over the past couple of weeks.

12. The real measure of success though, for me, shall be the too tight slacks being noticeably less tight.

13. My brothers, dad, and aunt (A turning 80 this month) had me thinking, of course, out loud and in living color, about my mother. The FB "On This Day" feature reminded me of something I posted in 2012 about a conversation she and I had. I may have written about it here, I didn't check because frankly, I was stunned by the memory.

14. Everything from 2012, leading to February 2013 kicked up for me in recent weeks.

15. All that said, and sickness aside, this old body managed to average 9,886 over the last seven days--topping off at 12,008 one of those days.

Have yourself a pleasant Monday / week.

More to Enjoy

May Days

A Block In The Neighborhood

May is National Bike Month. Bike to Work day was the eleventh. I didn't bike to work, I may not ever--at least so long as I work where I work. Unsettling is that I haven't been on my bike this season at all. If the rains stay away Melody could see some action this weekend.

Soon it will be my mother's birthday. I've arranged to have the day off from work. The plan is to be outside, playing tourist in the city, snapping pictures, having a pleasant day, in her honor. I tried to arrange a date with one of my cousins but she was not interested. Oh well, I shall see how the day plays out.

Speaking of family, I haven't spoken to my older brother in well over a year. We (my younger brother, older brother, and step-brother) are supposed to be coming to some agreement regarding a lawsuit filed on our father's behalf. My younger brother and I talked and we're on the same page. he said he'd speak with the others. He's stalling because he knows there will be push-back, dissent, disagreement, anger.

And on a brighter note, here is our pooch. She is thrilled with being outdoors, sniffing freshly cut grasses and more. During one of our walks we came upon a small boy, maybe 5 years old. He told his dad to look, "it's like a big version of a poodle!"

Welcome to Monday. Welcome to the middle of May.

WWW DOT COM

The HUGE Ferris Wheel @ Navy Pier

Monday thru Friday from about 8:45 (most of the time) until 5:10 or so I am unplugged from all social media. Sure, I'm online as most of the medical billing functionality as well as my work station telephone is internet based, but my internet activity is pretty much limited.

To be fully in compliance with HIPAA we are not allowed to have our personal phones (or other mobile devices) at our workstations (let alone.have them on) and we are not to access our personal emails or other sites while any of the medical billing pages are up. Actually, we are only to do those things during a lunch or other break time. We are allowed to access streaming radio like iHeart, Spotify, or Pandora which most do (we are allowed to have one ear plugged) as the office music selection of the day is not to the taste of the room at-large.

So, Monday thru Friday from about 8:45 am (most of the time) until 5:10 pm I have absolutely no idea what has gone on with my FB, Instagram, or Twitter feeds. And for the most part, I don't really care, wouldn't do me much good since I can't access them. I suppose I could take my phone to BK (or some other nearby spot) to surf or take WWF turns but I don't.

That isn't to say that I don't spend a good portion of the very long commuting time (about 90 minutes including waiting) scrolling through FB and Instagram, taking WWF (Words With Friends) turns, and reading blog posts. I try not to comment (sometimes I can't help it) because the bus jostling adds a bit of intrigue to tapping out coherency. .

Given the limitations I don't have a lot of time focused on or to be dedicated to Internet / social media sites for pure leisure. When I first got on-line oh so many years ago, I emailed and surfed the WWW. Surfing various topics (most having to do with lesbianism--as I wasn't "out" yet) led to a community of bloggers and eventually to my own blogging.

While I do have Pinterest, Twitter, WordPress, and Tumblr accounts I do not actively participate in any of those platforms. Tumblr asks every year if I'd like to keep my Tumblr name and I always reply, "yes" even as I have no intention to Tumbl(r). My leisure time Internet usage is FB, Instagram, Blogging, and to a very small degree, YouTube. (I shop on line but that is not a leisure activity).

A blogging (and FB) buddy talked about YouTube channels and the number of subscriptions she has. I had to admit, yes, I YouTube but had no idea how many channels I had over the years clicked, "subscribe". After reading her post I discovered that number was 26. I spent a few minutes un-subscribing and so now the number is: 19.

I have to admit, YouTube has not been my "go to" internet place for some time now. Their pay-to-play platform and more recent acts played a role in my staying (mostly) away. My most recent upload was 3 years ago. My YouTubing usually happens as result of a video being posted on another platform, usually FB or embedded in a blog.

My fellow blogger's post got me thinking not only about my YouTube subscriptions but about my overall Internet activity and how I might re-dedicate my leisure time Internet usage or even if I may (or should) re-dedicate more leisure time off-line.

I didn't realize this was even on my mind until I read her post on my way home from work today.

This and That

We had snow last week. Not like other places, but enough.

I hope the snow is over, but this is the Midwest, anything is possible

The madness that is March (i.e. college basketball) is in full swing.

And I have no idea who is where. Well, except for UConn.
(UConn women, I am sure you knew that.)

Why do people reach out, start a dialog and then just stop?

Click here for tidbits about the name Deborah.

According to family lore my name was nearly Clementine.

Ryerson, Morse, Beidler, Ryder, Dvorak, Suder, and Skinner are the names of the elementary schools I attended.

TidBits

#The biggest challenge in turning over this new leaf toward healthier eating, has been the impulse to lean into easy (lazy) behaviors. It is much too convenient to pick up a bag of chips, a couple of cookies, a candy bar, the dreaded quick service or something out of a box. Planning and prepping: impulse busters

#Several of my co-workers snack on sunflower seeds (with the shells). None, I believe, eat the shells. They all seem to build mounds of sucked on shells, leaving them on their desks (resting on a dish or paaper towels) until the mound is dumped in the trash. Some, must take sunflower seeds into the bathroom. I never expected to see a sucked on shell in the bathroom, not in the trash.

#It apears that unnatural hair colors are trending. Pinks. Blues. Magentas. Folks dyeing their hair from the box of 64 crayons, buying pieces, weaves, and wigs, that widen the spectrum even further. A couple of fellow commuters "had words" over expression of this trend. He said she had Now and Later hair. She wasn't as upset over the specific critque as she was over his nastiness in expressing his opinion.

#My mom's birthday is Thursday. I'm trying really hard to lift up the cheer-filled, happier moments. Feeling fairly confident that the effort was going to prove exhausting, I've already requested Friday off. Now, to just get through the 4 days . . .

#We had two (count them, two) days with temps touching 70 and the sun being our friend. Yay!

*don't mind the date on the photo--different camera, didn't reset--photo taken Sunday morning.

So, Yeah.

Lazy list because I should be in bed, but I'm not--but REALLY should be down for the count.

1. Both Buttah and Cinnamon have been sick. Nothing serious, but damn. Tired. Stressful.

2. I don't even want to begin to tell you how many conversations (with daughter) began with the status
   of poop.

3. Commuting is . . . well, I don't have the words at present. And even if I did--bed calls. .

4. Some purging did happen and will continue, albeit at a turtle's pace.

5. The summer so far has been, in a word, weird.

6. My daughter is slated to assist one of her culinary instructors with a catering gig later today. She is so stoked.

7. I am deep in the throes of a love / have relationship with paper. All paper.

8. But, then again, back and forth it may be, that relationship with paper is . . .ahhh..

9. Lovely.

10. That said, paper (as in bound in books) must leave. One box is done another shall be completed by the end of next weekend.

11. Just in time to drop off (at the high school) for THE FAIR

12. No, I will not be shopping at the fair this year.

13. That would be silly.

14. No, really.

15. Silly.

No Skirts, No Glory

6. Black pencil skirt

Versatile, stylish and surprisingly flattering, no matter what your size. Wear it to the knee (or slightly shorter if worn with black tights), and make sure it has a little stretch and some draping but is not tight. Pair with black tights and booties, or patent-leather pumps for night. Don't wear a flat shoe, but a mid-heel or high-heel pump, wedge shoe or boots.
See Figure 1:

Line item number six of ten, women aged 50 plus should have in their closet according to some AARP column writer. Noted.

. . . and that is where it ends. I had a reaction to the AARP column and this item (in my closet) in particular immediately upon reading it. I began this post but couldn't get past the above noted point in fashioning a proper post. So, it sat in the drafts folder for day. For weeks.

Because I don't like trashing (except for spam or spam-like emails) here it is, in all its unfinished, lack luster glory. I may figure out how to say what I think I want to say.

Or not.

No Title On Purpose

Pete: Why are you such a suck-up?
Buttah: Don't hate me because I'm beautiful!

1. In other news: my aunt is recovering, albeit slowly, from her stroke.

2. My brothers and I are still endeavoring to stay in touch. Granted, we don't have much to say to one another, but we do make the effort even if it is just to say, "hey".

3. Vet visit fail: the dog, it turns out, isn't spayed. She's in heat. She will be spayed as soon as possible after her cycle.

4. I'm not surprised by the hatred spewed over this ad but it angers me none-the-less. Post racial, my ass. That said, the response from the company: Right. On.

5. The week ahead is going to be a bear, quite possibly unbearable.

Donning armor. Welcome, June.

Snack Packing

A few weeks ago I tried my very first friend Twinkie. It wasn't horrible but it also wasn't a taste sensation I had any desire to re-visit.

And now with the news that Hostess is asking the bankruptcy court to liquidate, Twinkies (and other Hostess brands) being snapped off store shelves, it isn't likely I'll get my hands on the little spongy cake.

And while I'd rather not have the fried Twinkie exploration be my last Twinkie memory, I am not about to get into a bidding war for a box of cakes. Seriously? Hundreds of dollars for a box of mass produced snack cakes?

People are weird.

Prior to a few weeks ago (and the fried Twinkie exploration) I hadn't had a Twinkie in . . . I can't even remember when. I remember having them in my lunch bag on occasion, I remember packing them in my kids lunch boxes every now and then.

Truth be told, Twinkies weren't even in the top 5 of Hostess brand snack packing.

ME: THE ACTOR: THE DAUGHTER:
Suzy-Q Apple Pie Honeybuns*
Ding Dongs Honeybuns* Cupcakes
Ho Hos Nutty Bars* Apple Pie
Cupcakes
Sno Ball Cakes

*Little Debbie Brands

I feel awful that so many workers will lose their jobs due to (by most accounts I've read) bad management. I feel awful that while some of the brands may indeed live on (someday--as the food conglomerates scramble to snap up the more popular snacks) the Hostess bakers likely won't get their jobs back--or at least not anytime soon.

A cursory look-see was executed during Saturday's grocery trip and as I suspected not a Twinkie, Ho Ho, Ding Dong, or Suzy-Q to be found. A similar act will be conducted on my "last minute" shopping excursion sometime over the next couple of days. I'm not holding on to any hope of finding any of the more popular cakes, especially Twinkies which seem to have grabbed the nation, if not the world, as some sort of beacon to all snack cakes everywhere.

If the fried Twinkie is my last Twinkie experience, then so be it. I'm sure the pumpkin cheesecake on tap for one of Thursday's desserts will serve as a more than adequate Twinkie memory dasher.

Round Da Round

Yesterday in this space I posted something about me and my mom. The post (as does the event and subsequent chill that led to said post) weighed heavily on my mind.

So, I got up this morning and deleted it. *It* is likely still in the feeds. If you see it floating around, simply ignore it. Let it lie, limp.

Much appreciated.

Beyond that, what is happening? Puppy is happening. She's getting more and more comfortable. The training efforts are yielding positive results. Cinnamon sits like a champ. The daughter, of course, got her a costume for Halloween, Wonder Woman, if memory serves. There will be a least one picture.

Beyond that, what is happening? Gym! I joined over a month ago and have only been a handful of times. But the times, they are increasing. I am bound and determined to pull what has gotten out of control back together again.

Beyond that, what is happening? Just putting one foot in front of the other and moving the frack on.

End of Season

Someone in my building or someone (at the very least) with access to the front hall of the building sliced down more than half of the sunflower stalk growing, flourishing out in the front yard. I'd left my pruning shears sitting on one of the tables (holding my indoor plants) planning to use them at some point during the week to touch up some of the shrubbery following some aggressive growth following all the rain we've had.

My usual practice is to put all the yard tools away in one of the various storage nooks that populate the first floor of the condo building. But since I was planning to do some (light) weekday work, I'd left the shears at an easier access point. I'm trying not to take as a coincidence that the chopping down occurred during or just after Moe, Larry, and Curly of twenty-first century plumbing were in the space to replace a blown water heater. THAT, is another tale.

To say that I'm incensed over the incident is putting it mildly. I'd said a few of these:

upon leaving for work Friday morning and seeing the mutilation of my stately sunflowers.

Our small, nine unit condo building is self managed. I get a break on my assessments for caring for the common areas; sweeping, mopping, wiping down the halls and caring for the grounds. I shovel snow and clear ice in the winter, care for the yard , and keep the rear court-yard clean.

I tend to every plant and shrub (most of which I purchased out of my own funds) weeding, watering, and pruning as needed. I never maintained a yard before moving into this building. I've been an apartment dweller (mostly surrounded by concrete or yards "hands off" to tenants) my entire life. This little patch of earth was a new, exciting experience for me. I work diligently to clear trash, reset stepping stones, eradicate weeds (and mushrooms) and generally keep the area as appealing as possible given the limitations of time and budget.

For someone to rudely attack my work, my investment is beyond mean and it makes me want to

SCREAM
I did scream. Ask Neta, she'd called early Friday morning as I was leaving for work. I walked outside, saw the mutilation and . . . yeah, WTF'D all over the place.

I'm better now, though. It is September and soon the thoughts will turn to preparing the ground for winter, planning for next year, buying and burying bulbs. And yes, marking the spot of the current sunflower yield and devising a plan, for electrocuting anyone who touches protecting them, as well as, other yields from the savagery of neighbors? or their kids, or the friends of their kids.

In the meantime I will enjoy what is left of the summer, left of the various colors of our my yard.

Cornucopia of Thanks

Thankful . . .
  • for a sunshiny day.
  • for mom's gracious gift of food (and most importantly, shopping)
  • for daughter's breakfast treat.
  • for comfy shoes.
  • for that crazy cat.
  • for bullet points.
  • for being closer rather than farther from home when a nail flattened the bike's rear tire.

. . . to be continued. . .
